The Brotherhood of Lynn, Richard, and Kent
Short Story by PJ Hamilton
Among the seven of us, three stood out as the brothers: Lynn, Richard, and Kent. The bond between them was timeless, built on shared passions, laughter, and an unspoken understanding that only brothers can have. Whether they were out hunting, playing music, or reminiscing about family history, they were always drawn back to one another.
Lynn, the eldest, was strong-willed and independent, the one who lived by his own rules. Richard, the middle brother, was fun-loving, full of wit, and carried a musical soul. He had Daddy’s gift for the guitar, strumming songs that could bring a room to life. He even spent time in a band, writing songs that told stories as rich as the ones we grew up hearing. Once, he and I even went to a recording studio to lay down some of his music, a moment that I’ll always cherish, hearing his songs come to life through the speakers.
And then, there was Kent. Kent was special, always has been, always will be. He had this natural charisma that made you feel like you were the only person in the world when he talked to you. Each one of us shared a unique bond with him, as different as we all were, and yet somehow, he made each relationship feel equally important.
Richard was the one who first called him Buddy, and later, I gave him the nickname Bud-Bud the Stud, a fun little joke that somehow stuck. Even my kids call him Uncle Bud-Bud.
Over the years, the three brothers always found their way back to each other, no matter where life took them. Whether it was hunting in the woods, swapping family stories, or just spending time together in their own quiet way, their connection never wavered.
Richard and Kent, especially, were inseparable from the start. As young boys, they were side by side, and even as they grew into men, their bond never changed. Some of us siblings have drifted apart over time, but Kent? Kent has remained the thread that keeps us all tied together.
He loves each of us for who we are, without expectations or conditions, and we all love him just the same. Everyone who meets him respects him, admires him, and can’t help but be drawn to his warmth.
The three of them, Lynn, Richard, and Kent, are a true reflection of brotherhood, built not just on blood, but on shared moments, music, laughter, and the understanding that, no matter what, they will always have each other.
Just like Daddy and his brothers before them, the original Bates men, they have carried on the traditions with hunting, fishing, and standing by each other through it all.
The spirit of the Bates men lives on through them; a legacy of strength, loyalty, and an unbreakable bond!
